One morning on my way to work, I was listening to Ryan Seacrest on the radio. He was discussing an article he had read which suggests that the institution of marriage is outdated. Instead, the writer proposes that marriage should consist of a 10-year contract in which both parties outline their goals and expectations before entering the agreement. After the 10 years are up, the couple can choose to renew, amend, or dissolve their union. She, the writer, offers this as an alternative to “traditional” marriage because it forces the couple to think about long-term goals, facilitates communication on what they desire from each other, and offers them the chance to part ways without a messy “divorce.”

I would argue that this article drives the idea that people would rather throw away their marriages than try to make it work. That the sanctity of holy matrimony has been deduced to a legal negotiation: how many years, how many kids, how will we share our money, who gets to keep the house afterwards? She would have you believe that lifelong companionship is unnatural. There are statistics supporting that even “true” love has an expiration date.

I contend that love does last forever and people CAN stay married for life. Instead, it is the millions of irresponsible, unthoughtful, and reckless idiots who are quick to marry and even quicker to divorce like they’re unfriending an ex on Facebook.

Or maybe I’m the naive one?

You put a lot of thought, energy and belief into this post. And you legitimately wondered what we think about this, and therefore, I shall do the best I can to provide a legitimate answer…

I have a lot of problems with what you posted.

First of all, you blame the devaluation of marriage on our short attention span? You blame it on our generation, as if we’re the problems behind it? The author of the article you mentioned didn’t even mention this idea. That’s a whole lot of conjecture you’re putting out there – you’ve tied this relatively recent phenomenon of our short attention span to an institution that is literally thousands of years old. You pinpoint something as complex as marriage and love to our – what? Our short attention span? No, what’s more, to this generation’s short attention span? To pinpoint something as complex as love and marriage, and to say that something like a short attention is the reason for the rise and fall of it – well, it ignores the plurality of this world that we live in, and maybe it’s just me, but I find it incredibly ignorant when people just toss out all the other factors that complex something as big and grandiose as love/marriage.

Additionally, that’s insulting. Here you are, talking as if you’re some kind of wise old miser, all up on your high horse about the “sanctity” and “bond” of marriage – when you don’t seem to understand that you’re sitting on a braying ass that’s joining in on the noise you’re making. “Across all boards, young adults need to understand the importance of dedication and perseverance.” “Most people my age can’t even stay at a job for more than a year without getting bored and quitting (myself included).” My God, its not only young adults that need to understand this – everybody needs to understand this. Everybody. To just boil the problem to this generation leaves out the fact that this generation is the sum of all the generations before us, and even the generations we have to live with now. They leave behind the conditions that we must grow up with, the conditions we must react to/against, and they’re the ones who shape our future with their consequences. But of course, let’s forget about those fuckers and blame it all on us instead.

How dare you even assume that - that’s an insult to those couples who have tried, who have attempted to work at it, but they just couldn’t. You act like deciding to “divorce” is an easy decision to make, that they can just all of a sudden decide to call it quits. For God’s sakes, no – you think these people don’t seem to understand that marriage is a big deal? That they don’t sincerely, legitimately mean those words “I do” at the wedding altar? I bet your ass they do, and I bet your ass that they didn’t think that “divorce” is in their future. It is not something that people take lightly – and hear you are, with the assumption that they don’t want to give it a try.

Maybe that comes more from a reaction of a terrifying fact of life that we hate to submit to: that true love is far rarer than we’d like to believe. That the idea that there’s only one person, on this earth, out of the billions of people existing to this day – a person that’s my age, with my preferred sexuality, that complements my characteristics (despite the myriad of factors that complicate and make each and every single one of us a unique combination of flavors) – that a person like that is my soul mate, that that person is my one and only – that that idea does not sound ludicrous at all.

I guess I’m more insulted by the fact that you say these things with such ease, when you never go up to these people and ask them “Why did you divorce?” – and you don’t see the pain in some of their eyes. And you know what, a lot of those people want to agree with you, too – that love does last forever and that people can stay married for life. And you know what, some people want to believe in that so much that they give up too much of themselves to keep that idea alive.

But divorce happens. Divorce exists. Blame Henry VIII for that, but you know what, before you go off denouncing people who get divorced, maybe hear their side of the story first. Some marriages are just doomed to fail from the very beginning – and then there are those that you swear to great God almighty, you never imagined those two breaking up. That you never thought in a million years, anything could set those two apart – but nope. It happened. And that shit doesn’t happen over night – no, it’s happens over time, a long time. And it’s never just one problem - hell no, it’s a basket case full of them.

But for us to assume that is arrogant, I suppose. They say “Don’t assume, because you make an ‘ass’ out of ‘u’ and ‘me’” – there’s good reason for that, too. You claim “The communication and WORK should be taken care of in the dating phase— not marriage!” Jesus Christ, no, communication and work needs to be maintained all throughout a relationship, from the beginning of a relationship and all throughout a marriage, not just in the dating phase. You can’t expect to be able to have all your problems worked out in the dating phase, that’s naïve – that doesn’t take into account all the curveballs that life throws at you that might affect your relationship with the other person.

As much as we’d love to hear the Beatles sing “All you need is love” and believe in those words whole-heartedly — we, human beings, need more than love. We are far more complex creatures than that. And the world is a far more complex system than we can even imagine. There are millions, upon billions of factors that go into making one person — how many do you suppose go into making two? Most especially two people that are suppose to be one unit?

But that does not mean we should give up on “love.” No, much like you, I believe in it, too. But I invest a lot of my “love” on all the other kinds of love I have in my life — the love I have for my friends, my family, my hobbies, the experiences I’ve had in my life. And yes, there exists romantic love out there - I know I’ve had my fair share. And I won’t stop looking, in spite of my cynicism and the cold callousness of the world. That’s the beauty about the human spirit — our ability to always choose and chase after something as beautiful as “happiness” and “love.” The fact that “love” can do so much to the human spirit — but be wary, because, like a drug, too much of it can be a bad thing.

I know it seems like I keep on going back and forth on things, but that’s because… well… Nothing is ever as simple as you’d like it to be - and it’s never as simple as we think it is. You’ll understand after you talk to people - listen to other people’s stories of heartbreak, but at the same time, triumph-ic love. It’ll keep you going, in a time when you don’t think “true love” would exist out there for you.

They are, because people having varying numbers of Rods and cones in their eyes, it causes people to see colours differently.

Also there is a theory that everyone sees, for example, the colour red differently eg Red=yellow, but because we’ve been taught that, that specific colour is red, no one knows if everyone is seeing the same colour as another person.
